Celebrate Bike Month in May!
May is National Bike Month, dedicated promote and recognize options to encourage using bicycles for transportation and to promote awareness of the benefits of bicycling and bike safety. Bike to Work Week is celebrated May 13-19, and Bike to Work Day is celebrated on Friday, May 17.
The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) sponsors and promotes Bike Month and Bike to Work Day events and resources statewide.

- May 13-19 | Bike to Work Week, Central Maryland- register for t-shirt pickup locations and find local events in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, and Queen Anne's Counties.
- May 17 | Bike to Work Day, D.C. Metro Area - register for your local pit stop in Frederick County, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Washington, D.C., or Virginia to get your BTWD t-shirt.
Ways to Celebrate Bike to Work Day
- Work with your local bike shop to host a bike tune-up clinic.
- Hold a bike commuter workshop.
- Host a Bike to Work Day breakfast.
- Plan a group ride with co-workers, friends, or family. Remember to use the incenTrip app to log your bike commute and earn points and rewards!
- Promote bike safety for bike commuters and leisure riders.
- Get to know your local bikeshare system.
- Install bike parking, fix-it stations, or other amenities at your workplace.
- Launch bike commuter benefits within your organization. Many employers qualify for the Maryland Commuter Tax Credit by providing bike commuter subsidies.

Bike Commuter Benefits and the Maryland Commuter Tax Credit
The Maryland Commuter Tax Credit allows employers to claim back 50% of the cost of qualifying subsidies provided to bike commuters – up to $1,200 per employee per year. Qualifying bike commute costs include:
- Bicycle maintenance
- Bikeshare system memberships
- Bicycling gear (limited to helmets, hydration packs, bottles with cages, spare tubes, patch kits, tire levers, cycling multitools, bike shoes, bike gloves, saddle bags, reflective accessories, and locks)
