WALKERSVILLE, MD (August 6, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation today, in partnership with Town of Walkersville and the Walkersville Southern Railroad, celebrated the completion of new railroad and pedestrian safety improvements surrounding the historic Walkersville Southern Railroad in Frederick County with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Elected leaders, transportation officials and railroad representatives also toured the $1 million project’s new pedestrian crosswalk, accessible sidewalks, rail crossing surface and upgraded rail crossing flashing light signals.
“MDOT is proud to work with our partners to create safer roadways for everyone to use, including drivers at railroad crossings and families with small children taking a fun train ride,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Acting Secretary Samantha J. Biddle. “These safety improvements will build on the community’s strengths and help make the area an even more vibrant place to live, work and visit.”
The Maryland Department of Transportation, Town of Walkersville and Walkersville Southern Railroad contributed funding to the project that improved the highway-rail grade crossing and enhanced pedestrian access between the train station and museum.
“Improvements to the Walkersville Southern Railroad crossing will make this cherished tourist destination safer for all the families who visit,” said Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “Our community is committed to ensuring a safe environment for everyone. The planned trail that will follow the railroad's path will one day bring more people through this area, making safety improvements along Pennsylvania Avenue even more critical. I am grateful for the great partnership Frederick County has with the State of Maryland, the Town of Walkersville, and the Railroad Museum that made this project possible."
Funding from the Town of Walkersville contributed to the creation of a small new park with benches.
“The Town was excited to partner with Walkersville Southern Railroad in support of a significant improvement project aimed at enhancing both the appearance and safety of the area surrounding the railroad,” said Walkersville Mayor Burgess Weddle. “As part of this collaboration, the town contributed the use of municipal property along with targeted funding to help bring this initiative to life. These improvements not only beautify a key area of our community but also provide substantial safety enhancements for both residents and visitors enjoying the historic railroad experience. This project reflects our continued commitment to supporting local partnerships that strengthen infrastructure, boost tourism, and enhance the overall quality of life in our town.”
The Walkersville Southern Railroad is located alongside track that was a branch line for the historic Pennsylvania Railroad and operates several historic and family-friendly train rides.
“This project represents what’s possible when state support and community passion come together,” said Wayne Kirchhof, president of Walkersville Southern Railroad Museum. “It’s about protecting our guests, honoring the history of this place, and making sure everyone can safely experience the magic of the rails.”
The Maryland Department of Transportation is committed to eliminating all vehicle-related deaths and serious injuries on our roadways by 2030. This includes strategic investments in safety projects like the one completed in Walkersville. The Department’s
