Multi-Lane Closures Necessary to Shift Traffic in Work Zone; Highway Users Should Plan on Using Alternate Routes and Plan Extra Travel Time

(May 16, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is continuing its $39.8 million work to rehabilitate 10 bridges at the I-95/I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) interchange in the Arbutus area of Baltimore County.

On Tuesday, May 21 there will be a single-lane closure on northbound I-95 at 7 p.m., a double-lane closure at 9 p.m. and a triple-lane closure at midnight, with those three lanes closed until 5 a.m. Wednesday.  Additionally, crews will close and detour the northbound I-95 ramp to the outer loop (eastbound) I-695. The overnight triple-lane closure and ramp closure will allow crews to shift the traffic pattern in the work zone to prepare for the next phase of work. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. May 22, weather permitting.

Drivers should expect major overnight delays on I-95 and I-695 in the work zone and plan on using MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), US 1 (Washington Boulevard) or US 29 (Columbia Pike) as alternate routes.

The complete list of overnight ramp and lane closures is listed in the chart below.

The State Highway Administration's contractor, Wagman Heavy Civil Inc., of York, Pa.,

will use digital message boards, temporary signs, and barrels to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should slow down and pay close attention in the work zone.

The larger project will install 10 new riding surfaces on bridges within the I-95 / I-695 interchange and will replace concrete traffic barriers and parapets on the bridges. For additional information about the project, click here. Customers with questions about this project or other construction work on state-maintained roads in Baltimore County may call the MDOT SHA District 4 Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2300 or toll-free at 1-866-998-0367.

The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience but is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable highway system. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways. Motorists in need of help may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
